Family Resources
Families and caregivers play an important role in a child’s education. These resources can help you understand special education, prepare for school meetings, learn about parent rights, and plan for your child’s future.
Guides and information for families
Virginia Family’s Guide
A practical introduction to referrals, evaluations, eligibility, Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and other parts of special education in Virginia.
Understanding parent rights
The procedural safeguards notice explains legal protections, including consent, records, notices, and options for resolving disagreements. VDOE provides the notice in English and multiple translated versions on its family information page.
Preparing for an IEP meeting
Write down your priorities and questions. Think about your child’s strengths, current challenges, and what you would like your child to learn next. Share information that helps the team understand your child, including what works at home.
During the meeting, ask for explanations of unfamiliar terms and how proposed services will support your child. Ask how progress will be shared. Let the school know if you need an interpreter or another support to participate.
Working with your child’s school
Start with your child’s case manager or school administrator to discuss questions about current services. You can also contact our Special Education Parent/Family Liaison for help understanding the process and finding resources.
VDOE’s family information page includes information about the Special Education Parent Ombudsman and dispute-resolution resources. You may use state assistance and applicable dispute-resolution procedures without first completing informal discussions with the school.
