Getting Started
If you have questions about your child's learning, communication, behavior, or development, start with your child's school. A teacher, case manager, school counselor, or administrator can help you discuss your concerns and understand next steps.
Requesting an evaluation
A parent may request an evaluation when a disability is suspected. A referral can be made verbally or in writing. Describe your concerns and any supports that have already been tried. You may also contact the Special Education office directly to make a referral or ask about the process.
The team reviews the request and determines the next steps. An initial evaluation requires informed parental consent. If the division declines to evaluate, it provides written notice explaining that decision and information about parent rights.
What happens next?
1. Share your concerns
Explain what you are noticing at home or school. Share examples, relevant records, and questions you want the team to consider.
2. Review and evaluate
The team reviews available information and identifies any additional evaluation needed to understand your child’s strengths and needs.
3. Determine eligibility
You participate with the team in reviewing the information and determining whether your child qualifies for special education and related services.
4. Plan services
For an eligible child, the IEP team works with you to develop an Individualized Education Program describing goals, instruction, supports, and how progress will be measured.
Preschool children and children not enrolled in school
Child Find helps identify children who may need special education. You can ask about screening or evaluation even if your child is not enrolled in a Giles County public school. Contact our office for help with the appropriate referral route, including for children who attend private school or are homeschooled.
For preschool concerns or a transition from early intervention services, contact Dr. Jessica Morris. For infants and toddlers, our office can help families connect with early intervention. For Child Find screening questions, contact Andi Guynn-Lowe.
